                     History

The Gracie style of Jiu-Jitsu was created in Brazil in the early part of this century by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu pioneer Carlos Gracie, who studied traditional JapaneseJiu-Jitsu as a teenager under the great Japanese champion, Mitsuyo Maeda (known in Brazil as Conde Koma -- the "Count of Combat")

Carlos Gracie, who was interested in streetfighting and was also a boxer, quickly modified the classical techniques he learned from Count Koma to meet the demands of real, "no rules" fighting in the streets of Brazil. The young Carlos Gracie then tested and refined his system through constant matches, open to all comers, constantly working to make it more effective. At one point, he even advertised in newspapers and on street corners for new opponents upon whom to practice and further refine his art. He fought anyone and everyone who was willing, regardless of size, weight or fighting style. Even though he was a mere 135 pounds, his style was so effective that Carlos Gracie was never defeated and became a legend in Brazil.

Carlos Gracie had 21 children and his youngest brother Helio had 7 sons, creating a virtual dynasty of Gracie fighters and instructors who dominate the world of "no rules" fight contests today. In these events, Gracie representatives have consistently demonstrated, in open competition against title holders from other martial arts styles, that the Gracie style of Jiu-Jitsu is the most effective fighting art in the world today. No small wonder that the Gracie style of Jiu-Jitsu is the "hottest" item in martial arts today.

Since the famous Gracie family introduced Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) to the US in the 1990’s, the martial art has grown into an international phenomenon with competitions involving men and women of all ages being held around the world. BJJ matches begin from the stfanding position where the athletes aim to take their opponent to the mat with a throw or take-down.  From there, the fight usually remains on the ground as the competitors attempt to submit their adversary with joint locks and chokes. Successful practice of BJJ demands years of training and extreme fitness levels. The discipline has further evolved into submission grappling where the traditional heavy cotton gi or kimono is replaced by fighting shorts and t-shirt.  BJJ techniques are so effective that nearly all professional fighters in the expanding world of professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighting must be skilled in BJJ to succeed (See Ultimate Fighting at (www.ufc.com).  In East and Southeast Asia a growing number of academies teach this exciting martial art and interest in BJJ and submission grappling competitions is growing spectacularly.

FAQ

  1. Why do I need to wear a Kimono/Gi/Uniform to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was created by Grand Masters Carlos and Helio Gracie as a scientific self defense system to work in real street fight situations not in sport a competition. In a realistic street fight attack your aggressor will wear some kind of clothing. Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to use your opponent clothing and turn it into a lethal weapon. To train these techniques  hundreds of times we need to wear strong clothing that wont break/rip after 1 week.
  2. What are the benefits of practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Does it work for women?
Apart from learning how to defend yourself effectively against any aggressor no matter the size, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an excellent activity as it builds and/or increases self confidence. When you train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you are exercising every muscle of your body including your brain.
As for WOMEN, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is considered the best form of real self defense against a rape attack. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu work because of BODY MECHANICS not strength. During most attacks on women a victim will end up in a bottom position. But in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu this is considered a very favorable position to effectively attack and finish the aggressor from that position
  3. Do I need to be fit, young and very athletic to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
No you don't. Because the key to correct Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Self Defense is to learn how to use BODY MECHANICS and leverage. You do not need strength or agility to execute a technique. There is a saying in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: If you are using strength to apply a technique that means you do not know that technique.
  4. What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and other ground fighting systems like Judo, Submission wrestling or general grappling?
Judo is an Olympic sport created by Jigoro Kano, a Japanese Ju Jitsu expert, around 1900 and 1905.
Submission Wrestling / Grappling is a sport usually practiced on the ground, where you can win by points or submission. It is very similar to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu except it is practiced without a kimono and therefore limited to much fewer techniques.
